This revolutionary system, called the Firesat Network, will consist of more than 50 small, low-Earth orbit satellites capable of using thermal imaging and AI to detect early signs of wildfire ignition within minutes.
Los Angeles County, often one of the hardest-hit regions, will be among the key beneficiaries of this cutting-edge technology. Recent wildfires in areas like Malibu, Topanga Canyon, and Pacific Palisades have caused billions of dollars in property damage and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes, sometimes with only minutes’ notice. California has partnered with Google and aerospace companies for the project, combining data science, machine learning, and space technology into a comprehensive disaster-prevention strategy. The program is expected to be fully operational by 2028, coinciding with Los Angeles’ hosting of the Olympic Games — a period during which officials expect heightened fire risk due to heavy tourism and increased power grid demand.
